CASE STUDY: HealthOutreach®,
New York-Presbyterian Hospital

HealthOutreach's mission is to promote
health and well being among the senior citizen community
of upper Manhattan and the Northwest Bronx. In April
2001, Tom Sedgwick, the director of HealthOutreach was
interested in introducing their members to the various
health resources available via the Internet. He asked
earlSpeak to carry out this project.
First, earlSpeak determined that the
expected audience had the following characteristics:
they were primarily computer novices, did not own their
own computers and experienced some fear when they interacted
with technology.
With this in mind, earlSpeak created
a 3-hour, lecture-style course that introduced the members
of HealthOutreach to the wonders of the Internet. The
goal of the course was to point out to the students
the exciting possibilities that awaited them on the
Internet. Core concepts were discussed, including: an
explanation of the Internet's conception, the difference
between email and web addresses and the use of search
engines. Only after this foundation was laid, did we
proceed to a discussion on Internet health resources.
We firmly believe that an explanation of the "big picture"
coupled with the stirring of excitement amongst the
students, must always precede any elaboration on the
technical details.
